Description:

EMPRESS WILHELMINA HUSSARS REGIMENT NO. 15 PRESENTATION SWORD
A privately-purchased German M1889 cavalry ‘degen', 30.5 in. blade, 35.5 in. overall, a presentation sword for an officer of the Imperial German Empress Wilhelmina Hussars Regiment No. 15 of Hannover, named for the Empress of the Netherlands who ascended to the throne in 1898. The reverse of the blade is finely engraved with a laurel and oak leaf motif surrounding images of a mounted hussar and horse, with the regimental title ‘Hus[sar]. Rgt. Konigin Wilhelmina d. Niederlande (Hannov. No 15)'. The spine of the blade and the obverse continue the floral motif, surrounding a hussar's accoutrements and Wilhelmina's crowned ‘W' royal cipher, surrounding the regiment's Napoleonic War traditions: ‘Peninsula, Waterloo, El Bodon, Borossa'. The reverse ricasso bears the king and knight's helm maker's mark of W. K. & C. of Solingen. The half-basket-style hilt features a folding crossguard decorated with a Prussian eagle. The grip, originally brown bakelite, is a plain wood replacement, while the blade appears to have been replated (having originally been blued in the negative spaces of the engraving). The blade shows a very slight loss to the plating at the tip, with a few spots of oxidation overall, and with freckling to the hilt and oxidation to the pommel and grip collar. The sword is housed in a plated steel scabbard with two suspension loops, showing spots of oxidation throughout. In very good condition overall.
