Description:

(1724 - 1790) American Revolutionary leader, a Georgia Signer of the Declaration of Independence who saw his estate confiscated by the loyalist Georgia government and later served himself as Governor. Very rare manuscript D.S. "L. Hall" as Governor of Georgia, a position he held for only one year, 1p. 9" x 5 3/4", Savannah, Sep. 24, 1783. In part: "...These are to Certify that Capt'n Alexander Daniel Cuthbert of the Georgia Line is entitled to three hundred acres of Land as a bounty from this States, and also to three hundred acres by resolution of Congress of the 16th September..." The document is directed: "To any Court for granting Land &c. within this State". On the verso, Cuthbert presents the order to members of the Land Court in Augusta. Another notation indicates that Cuthbert received: "920 Acres as Major by Brevet". A couple of tiny repairs to ink-eroded letters in "Savannah", otherwise very good. Expertly inlaid. Cuthbert (d. ca. 1804) was commissioned into the Georgia Battalion on June 12, 177 and achieved the rank of captain. A great association piece!
