Description:

(1713 - 1803) Signer of the Declaration of Independence and wealthy New York businessman. He joined the Revolutionary movement when he attended the Stamp Act Congress and joined the Sons of Liberty. Rare manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, [n.p., likely New York], Mar. 22, 1762. Lewis and Roger Gibson of New London sign an obligation in the amount of twenty pounds due to John Russell of Suffolk County, New York. The document also absolves Gibson (and Lewis) of repaying the debt due to an outstanding claim made by Gibson against Russell provided Gibson forgives another debt between the two. Lewis and Gibson have signed at lower-right, and witnessed by future vice president GEORGE CLINTON (1739-1812) at bottom left. At some point in time, a vandal neatly clipped Lewis' signature from the document, and then it was reattached with archival tape on verso. There is no doubt this signature originated from this document as the descending loops from Gibson's signature above exactly match their finishing loops on the Lewis signature. A simple, professional restoration would easily remedy this minor issue, and the document is otherwise very good. Ex: Kenneth Rendell, ca. 1960-67.
