Description:

LOVE POEM BY SIR BANASTRE TARLETON TO HIS WIFE, ON THE VERSO OF AN ORIGINAL SKETCH
BANASTRE TARLETON (1754-1833) British cavalry colonel during the Revolutionary War, notorious for the massacre of Continental soldiers during the Battle of Waxhaws. Later a Liverpool MP and strong supporter of slavery. Fine original A.Ms.S. "Banastre" in the text, 1p. 12mo., "Charlton", [n.d.], an original poem dedicated "From the Bower at Charlton and For Susan", likely written during his courtship or shortly after his marriage to his wife, Susan Bertie. In full: "The sweets of a dew sprinkled rose, The sound of a murmuring stream; The peace which from solitude flows, Henceforth shall be Banastre's theme: Gay prospects may dazzle the sight, But we are not to find them our own; Fate never bestowed more delight Than I with my Susan have known." At the conclusion, Tarleton adds a note in pencil: "Written some years ago!" The poem is executed on the verso of an original pen-and-ink sketch by Tarleton, depicting a quaint stone house with a thatched roof, with a man fishing in the front yard with his wife by his side; it is possible that these figures are Banastre Tarleton and Susan Bertie themselves. The poem has been affected by some ink bleed-through from the sketch, with a 3/4" tear to the edge and pin holes at the corners, else very good.
