Description:

SIR BANASTRE TARELTON ORIGINAL SKETCH ALBUM
Excellent early nineteenth-century album, 34pp. oblong 4to., containing thirty-four original predominately pen-and-ink sketches, 11" x 8 1/2" and smaller, executed by British cavalry colonel Sir BANSTRE TARLETON (1754-1833), best remembered for the massacre of Virginia Continental soldiers at the May 1780 Battle of Waxhaws. His excesses gained him the nicknames "Bloody Ban", the "Butcher", and "The Green Dragoon". The sketches primarily depict landscape views of the British countryside, particularly castles and large estates. Notable among these are Bolesworth Castle, home of Thomas Tarleton, Banastre's grandfather; the ruined Wigmore Castle; Grimsthorpe Castle; and Gwydir Castle in Wales. Other notable images depict a deer, hunting dogs, a bearded man and country inns. The earliest sketch is an image of a flower dated 1767, executed by Tarleton when he was thirteen and signed with his initials "BT", while the latest are dated 1813. Many sketches bear captions in Tarleton's hand, either at the bottom edge or on the album page beneath the mounted image, while two are signed with his initials "BT", in addition to the childhood drawing described above. Two sketches bear additional notations in another hand, one identifying the image as being executed by "...Great Uncle Sir Banastre Tarleton". A cut paper silhouette of a horse, identified as "Suskin our favorite pony – died 1832", is affixed to one page, while another bears a period color lithograph of two women. The sketches are mostly mounted, with some showing ink inscriptions on the verso. The pages show minor foxing and toning, with some sketches showing slight ink erosion and minute tears, else very good.
