Description:

LOUIS-DANIEL TASSIN
(?-1794) French banker and member of the Constituent Assembly. A Royalist, Tassin was accused of assisting in the attempting to free Louis XVI on Aug. 9, 1792, for which he was imprisoned in 1793. Guillotined May 2, 1794. A fine group of three A.Ls.S. ‘Louis Tassin', each penned on integral address leaf letterhead and directed to the Mayor of Paris Joseph-Sylvain Bailly while the latter was residing in Nantes after ordering the Champs des Mars Massacres of September, 1792. The first letter, 3pp. 4to. [Paris], Dec. 10, 1792, sends news and an accounting of individuals. The second letter, 2pp. 4to., [Paris], Dec. 11, 1792, informs Bailly of social matters; while the third, 2pp. 4to., [Paris] June 19, 1793, concerns political matters. Bailly had fled Paris for Nantes in Nov. 1792, having become extremely unpopular after ordering attacks on crowds. He was found in Nantes, arrested, brought back to face the Revolutionary Tribunal in Paris, and guillotined. According to one source: ‘The little red flag he had used to give the order to fire on the crowds on the Champs de Mars was tied to the cart that took him to his death, and burned in front of him before he was executed'. Three pieces, very good condition, and worthy of further research.
