JEAN-SYLVAIN BAILLY
(1736-1793) French scientist and renowned astronomer who turned to politics, presiding over the Tennis Court Oath of 1789 and becoming the first mayor of Paris. A latent monarchist, he was guillotined during the Terror. A good group of material, including three A.Ls. [unsigned]. The first, 1p. 8vo., [Paris], Sept. 22, 1791, suggesting the substitution of two roles in the court of appeals; the second, [Nantes], Dec. 11, 1792, in regards to accounts of the municipality; and a third, 1p. 8vo., [Nantes], Dec. 27, 1792, penned to Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere (1734-1793), Minister of the Interior of in Louis XVI's government. Bailly regarding accounts from the municipality of Paris which have not yet been examined. Together with a printed copy of the ‘Trial of Jean-Sylavain Bailly', 31pp. 8vo., which describes the former mayor's trial leading to his execution. Together with twentieth-century archival documents from the Nantes Library on the gathering of information about Bailly. Very good condition, four pieces.
