LOUIS BONAPARTE
(1778-1846) Ruler of the Kingdom of Holland from 1806-10, younger brother of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, father of Napoleon III. Manuscript L.S. 'Louis', 1p. large 8vo., Wesel, Oct. 11, 1806 to Gen. LOUIS HENRI LOISEN (1771-1816). Louis orders that a shed suitable for sheltering 600 horses be built, and further instruct that officers and troops in Wesel are to be immediately put on alert. Bridges across the Rhine are to be guarded at all times on the left bank at night with all sightings to be immediately reported. Small paper label at bottom, else near fine. Loisen commanded a division under Napoleon in the Marengo campaign and, in 1805, led a division in Napoleon's Grande Armée during the Ulm campaign and served in the War of the Fourth Coalition in 1806 and 1807. He saw much action in the Peninsular War including all three invasions of Portugal. He also commanded Ney's famous VI Corps. During the French invasion of Russia he assembled a reserve division, which was later destroyed by the extreme cold weather.
