Liver Eatin Johnson's Hat The battered, weathered hat owned by Montana pioneer Liver Eatin ' Johnson! John. Johnson 1823-1900) was a noted Indian fighter who is said to have killed over 300 Crow Indians in revenge for the murder of his pregnant Flathead wife. Legend has it that Johnson scalped his victims, and at times would eat their livers (hence the nickname). Considered a true legend of the West, he was the inspiration for the film Jeremiah Johnson . The hat is made of green-grey felt with beige stitching about the inside and outside edges. It shows much use, with the stitching frayed and two short clean cuts in the felt. Accompanied by a Cody, Wyoming dealer's letter of provenance, an early typed identifying tag, and a large photograph of Johnson posing with pistol and rifle with the hat upon his head. A great relic!
