Bass to his brother, March 1850 to July, 185 1 Bass appears to be a cattle owner and professional driver, and gives news of his drives westward from western New York to points west of Illinois. In part: ...I am now about 1 75 or 180 miles on the route with 104 head of cattle, 30 pairs working oxen, the remainder steers. . there will be the best chance to buy this summer... come and meet me. . I shall have a hand that I can discharge... Griffith'sferry burned 17 miles below Cleveland... there lay 96in one grave... mostly immigrants... now on the road with 198 head of cattle, as a whole the best I have ever drove... cattle are getting very fat all the time... cannot drive more than 14 or 15 miles a day. . have some few pairs working oxen pretty well matched.
