Description:

LIST OF VESSELS CAPTURED BY THE U.S.S. SOUTH CAROLINA
War-date document, 1p. 16 x 12.5 in., [n.p., n.d.], titled ‘The following is a list of vessels captured by the U.S. Steamer South Carolina off Galveston from July 4th to July 7th'. The ten entries include schooners: Shark, Venus, Ann Ryan, W. Caufield, Louisa, Dart, Coralia, Falcon, Geo. Baker, and Sam Houston. The document indicates the first six vessels were captured on July 4th, two on the 5th, and one each on the 6th and 7th. The document details where each ship came from and where it was bound, name of the captains, number of passengers, number of crew, and cargo. The last column titled ‘Remarks' bears an entry for four different ships reading: ‘Pronounced worthless after survey and sent into Galveston with passengers', further commenting that a total of 85 prisoners were taken from the remaining ships. Signed at the bottom right by JAMES ALDEN, Captain of the U.S.S. South Carolina. Research reveals the South Carolina joined the Gulf Blockading Squadron in June of 1861 and was then stationed off Galveston, Texas, where she celebrated Independence Day with the taking of the ships listed here. She stayed in Galveston through early 1862 and then joined the blockade off Charleston, South Carolina in June, 1863 through the end of the war. The central, vertical fold bears two small holes at the top, else very good.
