WILLIAM W. MCKEAN (1800-1865) Union admiral, grandson of Signer Thomas McKean. He rose to the rank of flag officer in command of the Gulf Blockading Squadron in early 1862 and later the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. Great content war-date D.S., 1p. legal folio, 'Off Galveston', Sep. 3, 1861, a manuscript report signed at the conclusion by Union naval commander JAMES ALDEN (1810-1877), who took part in the relief of Fort Pickens, followed by many engagements on the Lower Mississippi, before being promoted captain of USS Brooklyn and assisting in the Union victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Alden lists cargo seized from captured Confederate blockade running schooners 'G. G. Baker', 'Tom Hicks', and 'Falcon' and placed aboard the USS South Carolina, including sugar, rosin, whiskey, and lumber. Received and signed for by McKean at the right margin, as well as Adm. WILLIAM MERVINE (1791-1868), commanding the Gulf Blockading Squadron within the Gulf of Mexico. Folds, very good.
