Description:

367. CHARLES A. LINDBERGH (1902-1974) American aviator who, in his "Spirit of St. Louis", was the first to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. An extraordinary vintage Lindbergh signed item, the Visitors Register from the prestigious American Club of Paris, boldly signed by Lindbergh three days after his triumphant arrival at Le Bourget. The entire May 24, 1927 page is dedicated to Lindbergh's entry alone. Under the column "Visitor", the aviator writes: "Charles A. Lindbergh", and notes his "Address" as: "St. Louis, Mo. U.S.A." Beneath the signature, a scribe notes the hours and dates of Lindbergh's departure from New York and arrival in Paris. He also notes: "Accepted invitation from American Club, May 20th in New York. Attended lunch of American Club, May 24th in Paris when 640 members and guests applauded him". So certain was Lindbergh of the success of his flight, he accepted the club's invitation to dine before he even left New York! The balance of the guest book bears hundreds of signatures of distinguished guests who have signed between July 2, 1914 and Dec. 15, 1938, the eve of World War II. Among those signing include BILLY MITCHELL, EDWARD FILENE (2), FERDINAND FOCH (2), DINO GRANDI, ELMER ROBERTS, PAUL PAINLEVE, JOSEPH JOFFRE (2), JULES JUSSERAND (2), NICHOLAS MURRAY BUTLER (3), JOHN J. PERSHING (8), HERBERT H. RICE, JOSEPH GOURAND, OTTO KAHN, SACHA GUITRY, RAYMOND POINCARE, JIMMY WALKER, ANDRE MAUROIS, RUTH ELDER, WILL H. HAYS, DIEUDONNE COSTE (2), ANDRE CITROEN (2), ADOLPHE MENJOU, PAUL MANSHIP, MYRON HERRICK (3), GENE TUNNEY (2), MAURICE CHEVALIER (2), THORNTON WILDER, ROBERT E. OLDS, OWEN D. YOUNG, JOHN ERSKINE, CLARENCE DARROW, JOHN N. WILLYS, JOHN FOSTER DULLES, HUGH DRUM, GILBERT WHITE, PAUL CLAUDEL, ADOLPH S. OCHS, MAURICE BELLONTE, PIERRE LAVAL, LOUIS BROMFIELD, EAMON DE VALERA, JAMES A. FARLEY, MAXIME WEYGAND, PHILIPPE PETAIN (2, once above a Pershing signature), ALEXIS CARREL, VINCENT AURIOL, LEON BLUM, HEBER J. GRANT, JOSEPHUS DANIELS, ALBAN BARKLEY, and hundreds of others. A collector has added copious notes on the right side of every page of the book making a time-line leading up to the invasion of France by Germany, and identifying most of the signers-we have named only the most prominent. In overall very good condition. The American Club of Paris arose from weekly dinners arranged by none other than Benjamin Franklin during his stay in Passy during the Revolution. It still exists today, described as: "France's oldest non-diplomatic American institution". An incredible look at a life of ease in pre-war France. $3,000-4,000
