368. GLENN H. CURTISS (1878-1930) American inventor and aviator who developed dirigible engines, invented the seaplane, and designed the JN-4 "Jenny" used in World War I, among a host of other aviation advancements. Superlative early S.P. "Glenn H. Curtiss", 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" b/w, a postcard photo showing Curtiss seated at the controls of an early aircraft, boldly signed in blue ink at top. The printed caption at bottom reads: "Glenn Curtiss ready to start on his record breaking flight". Fine condition. A postmark on the verso of the card dates the photo to January, 1910, indicating that the flight mentioned in the caption was Curtiss' August, 1909 win at the 10 km. race held by the Aero Club de France, winning the Gordon Bennett Cup. A few months later Curtiss would fly from Albany to New York and win a $10,000 prize offered by publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Signed photos of Curtiss, especially from this early date, are rare indeed! $800-1,200
