LETTER BY THE BROTHER OF ROBERT E. LEE, SIDNEY SMITH LEE
A rare war-date Confederate Naval letter signed by Robert E. Lee's brother and Naval Captain SIDNEY SMITH LEE, 1p. 4to. on Office of Orders and Detail letterhead, "C. S. Navy Department, Richmond, Va., August 2, 1864" to Lt. Comdr. John Rutledge, in part: "Yours of the 26th ultimo has been received. Be pleased to inform the Department of the present condition of your health...as the Department is much in need of officers to meet the pressing demand from the different squadrons...". Lee (1805-1869) was the older brother of Robert E. Lee, serving in the US Navy from 1820-1861, sailing with Perry to Japan and becoming commandant of the US Naval Academy. Very good.
