Description:

LEE HARVEY OSWALD
(1939 - 1963) American assassin of President John F. Kennedy who Oswald shot in Dallas, November 22, 1963. Oswald was in turn murdered by nightclub owner Jack Ruby days later. Superb content, very rare A.L.S. "Lee H. Oswald", 1p. 8vo., [n.p., undoubtedly the El Toro air base in Irvine, Ca.], June 19, 1959 to administrators of the Albert Schweitzer College in Churwalden, Switzerland where Oswald had applied for admission three months earlier. In full: "Dear Sirs, Enclosed please find the registration fee of twenty-five dollars which I understand is to be placed toward my normal college fees and expenses. I am very glad to have been excepted [sic] for the third term of your college next year and am looking forward to a fine stay. Any new information on the school or even the students who will attend next year would be appreciated. Thank you. Lee H. Oswald". File hole at left affects nothing, else very good. Ex: Charles Hamilton Galleries. This was all part of an elaborate ruse by Oswald in anticipation of his emigration to the Soviet Union. Oswald left the Marines and departed by ship from New Orleans on Sep. 20, 1959, to Le Havre, France. He left for England that same day, and arrived on Oct. 9. He told customs officials in Southampton that he had $700 and planned to remain for one week before proceeding to the college in Switzerland. But on the same day, he flew on a Finnair flight to Helsinki, Finland, where he stayed until October 15. Oswald probably applied for a visa at the Soviet consulate on October 12. The visa was issued on October 14. He left Helsinki by train on the following day, crossed the Finnish-Soviet border at Vainikkala, and arrived in Moscow on October 16.
