Description:

LEE HARVEY OSWALD
(1939 - 1963) American assassin of President John F. Kennedy who Oswald shot in Dallas, November 22, 1963. Oswald was in turn murdered by nightclub owner Jack Ruby days later. Superb content A.D.S. "Lee H. Oswald" at conclusion and "LEE HARVEY OSWALD" in the text, 1p. oblong 8vo., [El Toro air base, Irvine, Ca.], Mar. 19, 1959. While serving as a crew chief in the Marines, Oswald applies to the Albert Schweitzer College in Churwalden, Switzerland for the term between Apr. 12 - June 27, 1960. He indicates that he is 20 years old, that English is his mother tongue, and adds that he also speaks: "Russian (Equal in fluency 1 year of schooling)". He sets forth his nationality and address, but lies in stating that he is a "Student". A bottom, he remarks: "Please inform me of the amount of the deposit (If required) So I can forward it and confirm my reservation, and show my sincerity of purpose. Thank you". Some old tape stains are evident, overall affecting four words of text, some edge wear and staple holes, else generally quite good. Sold with a Mar. 22, 1960 letter from the college president to Oswald setting forth date changes for scheduled lectures and its transmittal envelope which shows the letter was forwarded to Oswald in Fort Worth. In the final years of his military service, Oswald subscribed to the Communist Party newspaper, The Worker, and claimed to have taught himself rudimentary Russian. At the El Toro base, in February 1959, he took the Marine proficiency exam in written and spoken Russian and his test results were rated "poor.". Of course, Oswald never attended the college: by the time the college president's letter was mailed, he had already defected to Russia. His application and acceptance was, however, used by Oswald as a ruse to cover-up his journey to Europe and, ultimately, his emigration to the Soviet Union. Ex: Charles Hamilton Galleries.
