Description:

1096. MEYER LANSKY Partly printed D.S. "Meyer Lansky", Boston, Sept. 9, 1938, check filled out entirely in Lansky's hand made payable to the "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" for the sum of $337.70. On the verso Lansky adds: "Income tax for 1937". At this point in the mobster's life, he was busy establishing illegal casinos (better known as "carpet joints" up and down the Eastern seaboard from Saratoga to Key West. In order to accomplish this and keep businesses running smoothly, he kept many public officials on his payroll. Thus it was most certainly not a problem for Lansky to pay his taxes... albeit just a little late! Light stamp cancellation only marginally affects signature, punch cancellations do not affect text, light vertical crease, else fine condition. $500 - 700
