Description:

STANLEY KUBRICK Scarce T.L.S. "Stanley " on his letterhead, 1p. 4to., MGM Studios, Boreham Woods [England], July 31, 1968 to Phillip Lambro, Hollywood composer who was hoping to score Kubrick's masterpiece "2001:ASpace Odyssey". In full: "Thank you very much for your tapes. I will write to you as soon as I get a chance to listen to them ". Kubrick ended up using pre-existing music for the film's score, including sprach Zarathustra , a piece now inextricably linked with the movie and its powerful classical soundtrack underscoring a novel non-verbal emphasis in storytelling. Unfortunately, "2001" composer Alex North wasn't informed of this decision, finding out his entire original score had been replaced only at the film's premiere! This marked the first instance of a major director using prerecorded music in a film instead of an original score, beginning a common practice in movie making. North's score was eventually released as an album, though Lambro was out of luck, later finding success himself composing for movie soundtracks and symphonies and working alongside Leonard Bernstein. Fine. $200-300
