Description:

KU KLUX KLAN KLAVALIER GROUPING
Most people recognize Klansmen by their pointed hoods and white robes, however few have ever heard the term 'Klavalier'. The Klavalier' essentially served as the Klan's 'strong-arms', enforcing discipline, maintaining order, and dealing with 'agitators'. They were obliged to have served in the U.S. military, have been honorably discharged, and underwent a rigorous background check as to their character and past service. Offered here is an especially rare grouping of Klavalier material Included is a white military-style visor calp, cotton body with black side band, black vulkanfibre brim, and a black chin strap secured at the ends with brass buttons bearing a 'k' in relief. The front of the cap bears a keystone-shaped screw back badge displaying an eagle, cross, swords, and the letters 'S P K'. The cap, unlined, also has a leather sweatband within. Also present is a copy of the 'Constitution and Laws of the Klavaliers of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, State of Pennsylvania', 5pp. 4to., ca. 1925; an April 14, 1925 Pittsburgh report sent to Klan 'executives' mentioning Klavaliers and other Klan news, a blank 'Application to Klavalier Unit, K.K.K.', a report on income and expenses incurred for the 'Klan Kristmas Kiddie Treat' event hosted by the Klan, submitted by Klavalier Alfred Blough, Johnstown, Pa., Jan. 21, 1925; a Nov. 9, 1927 letter on 'Altoona [Pa.] Klavaliers' letterhead advising that the group will be unable to attend an event at Johnstown, Pa.; an advertising blurb for a Klan lecture with ten blank lecture report forms; and a chilling 41 x 10 in. b/w panoramic photograph of perhaps thousands of Klansmen in robes gathered before the base of the Washington Monument, captioned in the plate: 'Gathering of the Klans West Virginia Klans arrive at Sylvan Theatre Potomac Park Washington D.C. August 8th, 1925'. A number of Klavaliers are visible before the crowd, especially at left, evident by their military-style headgear. Overall fine condition.
