Description:

KU KLUX KLAN OFFICER'S UNIFORM, RANK OF 'KLEAGLE'
Rare ca. 1920s Ku Klux Klan officer's hood and robe with insignia indicating the wearer had achieved the rank of 'Kleagle' a member of the Klan's propaganda and recruiting branch. Such members were most often well educated and respected citizens who lectured at Klan meetings and public events. The front of the robe bears a white buttoned closure with a single Knights of Camelia patch sewn to the left breast, and the large cape at the back bears a red underlay indicating an officer's ranking. A tasseled cotton waist belt is present as well, though both the belt and the white front of the cape have been affected by careless laundering and the red dye has bled a good deal. The garment als shows a few small stains and holes. The peaked hood is of typical 1920s construction with hand-sewn eye openings. A large, ostentatious 'phoenix' emblem and the letters 'KL' are embroidered to the left side. The hood itself has a few trivial stains but is otherwise very good. A Kleagle was an officer of the Ku Klux Klan whose main role was to recruit new members, and must maintain the three guiding principles: 'recruit, maintain control, and safeguard.' Kleagle members were typically paid by commission and received a portion of each new member's initiation fee, similar to multilevel marketing schemes in later years. KKK members were encouraged to recruit others by framing economic, political and social structural changes that were favorable and in-line with KKK goals. These goals promoted '100 percent Americanism' and benefits for white native-born Protestants.
