JOSIAH TATTNELL
(1795 - 1871) Confederate commodore who defended Fort Royal and later scuttled the Merrimac to prevent her capture. He spent the balance of the war fighting the Federal blockade. Rare war-date Confederate naval flag officer's manuscript D.S., 1p. 4to., Savannah, Georgia, Feb. 17, 1862, assigning Lt. John Rutledge to command of Fort Cheves situated on Causton Bluff in the defensives of Savannah. In part: "...You are hereby appointed to the command of Fort Cheves near Fort Jackson. You will report yourself to me onboard the Fingal (my flag ship) with a view of organizing your command...the officers and crews of the Lady Davis and Huntress including marines and engineers will for the present be attached to your command...you will...commence their drill at the guns as soon as possible...". Light toning, else very good condition.
