RUTLEDGE IS ASSIGNED TO COMMAND THE USS HAMPTON
A good war-date A.L.S. by Commander Thomas W. Brent, 1p. 4to., "Commandant's Office, Naval Station, Savannah, Ga., April 24, 1862" directing Lt. Rutledge to assume command of the CSS Hampton, in part: "...You will transfer command of the Naval Battery to Lieut. Johnson & by command of the Secretary of the Navy you will proceed to Norfolk, Va., & report for the command of the gun boat Hampto...". Brent, a former American naval officer who resigned his commission on January 19, 1861, became a commander in the Confederate navy the following March, later commanding the ironclad CSS Savannah in 1864. The CSS Hampton was built at Norfolk naval yard and was based in the James River helping defend Richmond for over three years, participating in the battles of Dutch Gap, Fort Harrison and Chaffin's Bluff, until she was burned upon the evacuation of Richmond on April 3, 1865. Usual wear and some fold splits at margins, else very good.

Handling, shipping and insurance charges will be added to the invoice in one entry.
