Description:

JOSEPHINE "JOSIE" EARP
(ca. 1861 - 1944) American actress and professional dancer, best known as the wife of Western lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp. Josie's first romance in Tombstone was with Wyatt's arch enemy, Sheriff Johnny Behan, whom she left when she discovered his philandering ways. By 1882, she had adopted the name of "Josephine Earp", although no official record of their marriage exists, and she was on the scene following the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Although their marriage was contentious, they shared a life of mining, operating saloons, and even worked as a gambling team. Good content A.L.S. "Josephine Earp", 4pp. lg. 8vo., Oakland, Oct. 3, 1929, to John Flood, Wyatt Earp's business secretary, friend and biographer. In part: "...Just these few lines in a hurry. I received your letter also one to send to Mr. L. I suppose you are kept pretty busy since you returned to the desert...I heard from Mr. Lake a week ago and he said I should not come to San Diego last of Oct. early in Nov. as by that time he will have papers ready for me to sign as turned the story [an unauthorized biography of Wyatt] over to the publishers and will have everything ready..." and more of such content. With original holograph envelope signed "J. Earp" on verso. Very good.
