Description:

JOSEPHINE "JOSIE" EARP
(ca. 1861 - 1944) American actress and professional dancer, best known as the wife of Western lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp. Josie's first romance in Tombstone was with Wyatt's arch enemy, Sheriff Johnny Behan, whom she left when she discovered his philandering ways. By 1882, she had adopted the name of "Josephine Earp", although no official record of their marriage exists, and she was on the scene following the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Although their marriage was contentious, they shared a life of mining, operating saloons, and even worked as a gambling team. Good content A.L.S."Josephine Earp" 3pp. 8vo., Oakland, Apr. 25, 1929, to John Flood, Wyatt Earp's business secretary, friend, and biographer. In part: "...I did not mean to be slow to respond to your nice letter. I wanted to wait and see if I could be in Los Angeles in the next ten days but it seems now like I will not be able to get away until about the fifth, or six [sic] of Oct. and I know you cannot wait until then. I thank you very much for offering to wait a few days until I could get there. I will see you when I come to Vidal. I have many things that I must attend to before I go to the desert...I hope you are right to the gross or net but different attorneys have told me that you are wrong - we will have to wait and see...I am feeling much better but still have a cold...I have not heard from Mr. Lake for some time. I can't understand why he did not write to me for so long...I worry for my husband [Wyatt Earp] I miss him so much, that is all I can write you now...". With original holograph envelope signed "J. Earp" on verso, very good condition.
