Description:

JOSEPH REED
(1741 - 1785) Revolutionary statesman and soldier, signer of the Articles of Confederation, delegate to the Continental Congress, served briefly as an aide-de-camp to Washington, and played an important role in the Howe Peace Commission. Large, bold war-date signature "Jos. Reed President" cut from a document. Reed's notation as president refers to Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, of which Reed was president from 1781-1782, a position analogous to governor. Reed presided over Pennsylvania during a crucial time in the American war effort, helping turn the tide against the British after Valley Forge. Light toning, very good.
