Rare war-date A.D.S., 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters Department Washington", Apr. 29, 1861: "...Capt. John R. Goldsborough will pass on the first train tomorrow for Philadelphia...". Beneath appears the response from his correspondent, Union Brigadier General BENJAMIN BUTLER: Pass without charge B. F. Butler Brig. Genl.". Slight offsetting to Mansfield's signature, folds, else very good. John R. Goldsborough (1809-1877) was a distinguished officer in the Navy. During his long naval career, he fought against pirates in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Civil War and rose to command the Asiatic Squadron. This pass sent Goldsborough to his first Civil War command, the USS Union, chartered by the Navy in Philadelphia five days earlier. He would proceed to blockade Savannah where he would capture several prizes on his first cruise.
