SAMUEL P. MOORE
(1813 - 1889) Surgeon General of the C.S.A. who organized a system of general hospitals and improvised medicines and medical supplies saving many lives. Rare, lengthy war-date A.E.S. on the verso of a copy of Special Order No. 56 secretarially-signed for Robert E. Lee, 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters, Department of Northern Va., Feb. 27, 1863. The document orders that certain men unfit for active duty in Trimble's Division be sent to Richmond to report to Gen. Elzey for hospital duty. On the verso, Moore endorses the document in 13 lines, indicating that a certain men: "...are not required at Camp Winder Hosp. but can be transferred to Genl. hosp...White Sulpher Springs...". Also signed by surgeon and Inspector of Hospitals WILLIAM A. CARRINGTON. Some large, dark stains not affecting signature.
