Description:

JOSEF PRILLER PRESENTATION PAINTING TO (K.I.A.) ACE KLAUS MIETUSCH
A fabulous association piece, an original presentation watercolor painting on board presented by JOSEF PRILLER (1915-1961) as Gruppenkommander to his top ace, Staffelkapitan KLAUS MIETUSCH (1918-1944) who would be shot down and killed by an American P-51 two years hence. Hauptmann and Gruppenfuhrer Josef Priller, who would accumulate 101 kills in 307 combat missions and become a recipient of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, boldly signs this handsome presentation at bottom right. The painting depicts three Teutonic knights on horseback, two carrying banners, the third a lance. It names Oberleutnant and Staffelkapitan Mietusch and honors him on his '20th aerial victory'. Priller presents the painting on behalf of III/JG.26. Some text slightly faded, else very good. In a later wood frame. Mietusch fought in France where he earned his first kill, later serving in Malta, Balkans and North Africa, then on the Eastern Front before returning to Germany. Mietusch was killed in action on 17 September 1944 during the first day of Operation Market Garden. Posthumously, Mietusch was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. A great Luftwaffe piece!
