Description:

HANDCRAFTED KEEPSAKE BOX OF KIA GERMAN SOLDIER GERHARD HABERLEN
Custom-made wooden keepsake box, 10.5 x 7 x 5.5 in. tall, belonging to the family of Gerhard Haberlen, a first lieutenant in the German Army. The box has four legs, a different design on each side, and a three-tiered lid with what is believed to be the family crest and his initials. On two sides of the box are Haberlen's birth and death dates '17.8.16' and '12.8.41'. The interior of the box is lined with a green leatherette, while the shadowbox underside of the lid itself contains Haberlen's medals and ribbons under a glass face. The glass is secured under a carved border reading: ‘My life was short but beautiful and strong'. The awards include: Infantry Assault Badge in Silver; Iron Cross, Second Class; Bronze DRL Sports Badge; Westwall medal ribbon bar; and an Iron Cross ribbon bar. Also contained within the box are several documents related to Haberlen, including: his Wehrpass detailing his military career; award certificates, promotion documents; and two letters explaining that this commemorative box was made by a relative of the immediate family to honor Haberlen, their youngest son, and was given as a Christmas present. An unfortunate loss to a small piece of the wooden design on one side, otherwise it would seem this piece has been very well preserved. Haberlen was killed in action in Smolensk, Russia during the second phase of Operation Barbarossa.
