Description:

341. ANDREW JOHNSON D.S. as President, 1p, large folio, Washington, DC, April 20, 1865, an engraved military commission conferring upon Charles D. Todd the rank of Captain for "gallant and meritorious services in the present campaign before Richmond, Virginia". It is interesting to note that this commission was originally dated April 10, 1865 - five days before Lincoln's death. Following the assassination, the "Tenth" was scratched off and changed to "Twentieth" in order to coincide with Johnson's administration. In addition, Johnson only signed commissions during his first few months in office, after which a steel stamp of his signature was used for such tasks making this a scarce and unusual example. Johnson's signature a bit light in spots, otherwise very good. $700 - 900
