Description:

JOHN TYLER
(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. THE FIRST COMMISSION AWARDED TO FUTURE UNION GEN. CHRISTOPHER C. AUGUR Important partly-printed D.S. "John Tyler" as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Feb. 17, 1845. Less than a year before the annexation of the Republic of Texas and the outbreak of war with Mexico, Tyler appoints future Union major general CHRISTOPHER C. AUGER (1821-1898) to the rank of: "Brevet Second Lieutenant of Infantry," effective from July 1, 1843. The document bears a fine, bold signature at lower-right. It is additionally co-signed by Secretary of War WILLIAM WILKINS (1779-1865). In very fine condition. This date corresponds with Augur''s graduation from West Point, along with classmate Ulysses S. Grant who would join Augur in Mexico as a lieutenant in the 4th Infantry. Augur served in Mexico under Zachary Taylor, then in the Rogue River Expedition in the Northwest. He was later appointed Commandant of Cadets at West Point. He rose to the ranks of brigadier and major general, commanding at Fredericksburg and Cedar Mountain (severely wounded), and then Army of the Gulf during the siege of Port Hudson. On April 14, 1865 Augur was one of the Army officers who were present at the Petersen House where the mortally wounded President Lincoln was taken. He was also instrumental in mobilizing troops to pursue and eventually capture Booth and his co-conspirators, including the detachment that tracked down and killed Booth.
