Description:

LYNDON B. JOHNSON
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the "Great Society" social welfare programs. America''s growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining to seek reelection. Fine association I.S.P., 14" x 11" b/w, a view of Johnson with his wife and daughter, along with Speaker of the House John McCormack and his wife, taken on Inauguration Day, 1965. Johnson adds an inscription in black ink at bottom, in full: "To Speaker & Mrs. John McCormack from their devoted friends - Luci, Lady Bird & Lyndon B. Johnson". Inscription shows slight brushing, else very good to fine. McCormack''s nine years as Speaker were predominated by House passage of Great Society legislation during the administration of Lyndon B. Johnson, including laws to expand civil rights, access to public education, and health care for the elderly.
