DANIEL SMITH DONELSON
(1801 - 1863) Confederate major general. The historic river-port of Fort Donelson was named for him as a brigadier in the Tennessee militia, early in the Civil War. He led the initial assault at Perryville, and fought at the Battle of Stones River. Died of disease. Very rare war-date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 1p. 4to., 'Green River Bridge', Oct. 21, 1861 to C.S.A. Brig. Gen. HENRY R. JACKSON (1820-1898), who had seen action at Cheat Mountain a month earlier, the first battle of the war in which Robert E. Lee led troops into combat. In part: '...I have nothing of interest to communicate since my last of yesterday. I have heard nothing of a forward move on the part of the Enemy in my front -- I am waiting anxiously to know the result of the move, made by the Enemy on your right wing.
