JOHN MARSHALL
(1755 - 1835) Supreme Court Chief Justice and the principal founder of the American system of constitutional law, including the doctrine of judicial review. Fine and rare as Chief Justice A.D.S. signed ten times, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.], June 18, 1816, signed nine time in the text and once at conclusion. A lengthy legal document regarding funds due him for the sale of land, in small part: "...This indenture...between Walter L. Fontaine of the County of Buckingham and John Marshall of the city of Richmond...witnesseth that the said Walter L. Fontaine in consideration of the sum four thousand and two hundred and fifteen dollars to him...paid to him by John Marshall at and before the sealing and delivery of these present he the said Walter L. Finate granted bargained and sold and doth by these present grant bargain and sold to the said John Marshall one certain tract of land lying on Randolph's neck in the county of Buckingham containing by estimation four hundred and twenty one and one half acres being the same land which is conveyed to the said Walter L. Fontaine by John Marshall and Mary Willis his wife...Walter L. Fontaine stands justly indebted to the said John Marshall...& will truly pay to the said John Marshall the said sums of money...". At bottom is a schedule of payments. Boldly signed by Marshall at conclusion, as well as Fontaine. Folds and a couple of small holes, light waterstain to right margin, overall very good condition.
