Description:

JOHN M. CLAYTON
(1796-1856) American politician and statesman from Delaware, Secretary of State under President Zachary Taylor. Fine content A.L.S. with integral franked address sheet, 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 22, 1845 to banker, merchant, and railroad executive William D. Lewis in Philadelphia. Only four months before the outbreak of the Mexican War, Clayton writes: '...It is not my opinion that there will be a war with England about Oregon or anything else. The party in power...will not fight unless England declares war. I have seen a confidential letter from out late Minister to Mexico stating that there is no vacant land in Texas worth having. The party favorites and speculators now have taken up all the valuable land. There is a strong party in Congress opposed to the assumption of the Texas debt, and some of them who are willing to assume it declare their determination to pay no more for the securities than was paid for them by the holder...'. Faults include a mouse-chewed hole in the text and at one margin, and some staining.
