JOHN JOHNS
(1796 - 1876) Episcopal bishop of Virginia, baptized and confirmed CSA President Jefferson Davis, and at great risk to his life, rode onto battlefields to tend the wounded and dying. For his many deeds, he has been called the "savior" of the church in Virginia. Early A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, Baltimore, July 16, 1828 to the Committee of the Vestry at Christ's Church in Baltimore. In part: "...I stated to you my conviction of the propriety of [?] my formal of my appointment to the Rectorship of Christ's Church Baltimore until I had the pleasure of a personal interview with the vestry...I accept of the important station to which you have been pleased to invite me...with the unanimous wish of the vestry...also in accordance with the desire of the congregation at large...". Fine. In the same year, Johns lost the election for Bishop of Maryland by only three votes.
