Description:

JEDEDIAH HOTCHKISS
(1828-1899) Cartographer to Confederate Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and given much of the credit for Jackson's amazing success in his Valley Campaign of 1862. Following Jackson's death after Chancellorsville, Hotchkiss was assigned to Generals Early and Ewell, but was also called upon by Robert E. Lee from time to time during the last two years of the war. After the war ended, Hotchkiss returned to Staunton, Va. to continue as a topographical engineer. Original hand-drawn map drawn by Hotchkiss soon after the Civil War. Measuring 7" x 9 1/2" (sight), it is lettered and numbered in Hotchkiss' hand, and depicts a tract of land labeled "O" lying on "Jackson's River". The land is bordered by "Sulpher Spring Brook", and a stream in "Sugar Camp Hollow" lies to the north. The map, on thin paper, has also been hand colored by Hotchkiss. Nicely matted with photos of Hotchkiss and Jackson, as well as with Jackson's quote: "I want you to make me a map of the Valley...", all set into an attractive ornate silver wood frame with UV glass. This particular map was part of a recently discovered bound report that included surveys and maps of a large parcel of land in Alleghany County, Va., prepared by Hotchkiss in 1872. Original maps by Hotchkiss are extreme rarities, as it is believed that all of his known war-date maps and virtually all of his post-war works are in the Library of Congress. A copy of the Report's title page, Hotchkiss' signed "Notes" to the report, and other relevant pages accompany the lot.
