230. JOHN F. AND KENNEDY JACQUELINE KENNEDY SIGNED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPH An exceptional and very rare I.S.P. , 8" x 10" b/w, [n.p., n.d. but taken at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Newport, Rhode Island, Sept. 12, 1953], a fine image of young Sen. JOHN F. KENNEDY escorting his new bride JACQUELINE KENNEDY from the church as onlookers and cameramen are restrained by police, inscribed by John: "Dave and Mrs. Deignan With very best wishes from us both. Jack" and also signed by his new wife: "Jackie". The first three letters were started with what appears to be a blue ballpoint, then Kennedy switched to a black fountain pen, going over those three letters and then completing and signing the inscription. Part of the inscription and Jackie's signature have lightened a bit to about 8/10, Jack's signature remains bold. Photo is mounted and is otherwise in fine condition. David Deignan was employed as chauffeur and occasional personal assistant to Joseph Kennedy, Sr. and was also considered a very close friend of the family. Although the wedding heralded the beginning of a modern "Camelot", there was a great deal of heartache preceding the ceremony. According to Jackie: Her Life in Pictures, Jackie's parents, the Auchinclosses, had excluded her father from all pre-wedding parties and blocked his telephone calls to Jackie, all of which devastated "Black Jack". "The morning of the wedding, upset and nervous, he began to drink. Although two of his brothers-in-law assured [Jackie's mother] Janet that Black Jack was still able to perform his duties, the fear of embarrassment led them to bar him from the church. Hugh Auchincloss took Black Jack's place and walked the bride down the aisle...." Jackie was awed when over three thousand gawkers showed up outside the church, and with all of the controversy surrounding the marriage and her father's intemperance, the couple's wedding vows were nearly inaudible.
