Description:

(JOHN I OF ARMAGNAC)
(1311-1373) Count of Armagnac who initiated the expansion of his county in the 14th century, royal lieutenant to King Philip VI, providing many troops to the French crown during the Hundred Years'' War. Interesting content manuscript letter in a secretarial hand on parchment, 1p. 11 1/4" x 4 1/4", Toulouse, April 13, 1356, to Jacques l''Empreur, Philip VI''s treasurer of war. John orders the payment of one thousand gold ecus for the ransom of Gaubert de Beauville, brother of Ponce and Arnaud de Beauville, allies of Edward, the "Black Prince", against Philip, but who eventually capitulated to the French crown. Gaubert had been in the captivity of Aymerie de Rochecouart, seneschal of Toulouse and a captain to Philip. The sum is to be deducted from the four thousand ecus already granted to Ponce de Beauville for his submission to Philip. The order concludes with John''s title "Monsieur the Lieutenant [to the King]", but the signature itself and its accompanying seal have been cut away. Shows folds, minor toning at the upper edge, and a much later stamped star near the conclusion, not affecting any text, else very good. Includes a typed translation.
