Description:

JOHN G. WALKER AND WILLIAM E. 'GRUMBLE' JONES
A fine pairing of signatures of future Confederate generals on a single pre-war document. WILLIAM R. 'GRUMBLE' JONES (1824-1864) Confederate cavalry general serving under J.E.B. Stuart. After disagreements with Stuart, Jones's brigade was set to guarding supply lines and unavailable during a crucial juncture of the Gettysburg Campaign. Jones was eventually transferred to separate him from Stuart, and he would be killed leading a counter-attack at Piedmont. Jones pens an A.D.S., signed as first lieutenant at the conclusion and again in the text, 1p. oblong 4to., New Mexico, 1856, indicating the sale of 137 lbs. of ham to officers at an illegible fort in New Mexico. At the bottom the sale is confirmed by Captain JOHN G. WALKER (1821-1893), future Confederate major general serving under Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet, before commanding the Texas Division unit in the Trans-Mississippi Department, known as Walker's Greyhounds for their speed and agility. Tipped to a larger sheet.
