Description:

JOHN F. ECHOLS
(1823 - 1896) Confederate brigadier general who served with Jackson and Loring, later succeeding Loring as commander of the Army of Southwest Virginia. War-date manuscript L.S. 'Jno. Echols', 1p. 4to., Dublin, Nov. 14, 1864, on lined blue sheet to Braxton Bragg's staff officer, Maj. Stoddard Johnson. In part: '…Col. A. C. Cummings desires permission to ship fifty bushels of wheat from…Pulaski County to Abingdon, for the use of himself and his two brothers. Please grant him the permit and send to Abingdon…Perhaps you better send the permit to me at this place…'. Very good condition. Alfred C. Cummings (1822-1905) played a critical role at First Bull Run, where he boldly led his regiment in front of Jackson's Brigade, ensuring the enemy's retreat. Very good.
