Description:

JOHN F. KENNEDY
(1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the United States. Kennedy faced-down the Kruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis, re-invigorated NASA, and signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Assassinated November 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. A superb association I.S.P. "John Kennedy", 8" x 10" sepia, shows Kennedy from the waist-up. Signed and inscribed in the upper right corner "To Bobby Baker the 101st Senator with warm regards and esteem John Kennedy". Bobby Baker (b. 1928) began his colorful political life at age fourteen as a page for Senator Burnet Maybank and quickly became friends with the Senate Majority Leader, Lyndon Johnson and rose to the post of Secretary to the Majority. In that capacity, he was often referred to as the "101st Senator". Baker ingratiated himself to other members of the Senate through a variety of official and non-official means, and was one of the founders of the Quorum Club located at the Carroll Arms Hotel next to the Senate Office Building. It has been alleged that the club became a preferred spot for Senators and lobbyists to meet for food, drink and women. Baker and one his colleagues was said to have arranged a meeting between John F. Kennedy and club hostess Ellen Romstsch who was of East German origin and a member of the Communist Party before emigrating to the United States. Baker soon came under investigation for other infractions including bribery using money and arranged sexual favors in exchange for votes and government contracts. Attorney General Robert Kennedy was able to help squelch the scandal by having J. Edgar Hoover pressure Senate leaders to limit their investigation by threatening to expose information of their own indiscretions. Ironically, Baker soon became the subject of a civil suit brought by a disgruntled government contractor. Baker resigned his post in October, 1963. Minor creases, else fine condition.
