Description:

JOHN F. KENNEDY AND JOSEPH KENNEDY, JR.
Excellent association and excessively rare signed book, Kennedy's college thesis later published as: 'Why England Slept' (New York: Wilfred Funk Inc.), 1940, 252pps. 8vo., first edition 3rd printing. The book examines the failures of the British government to take steps to prevent World War II and its initial lack of response to Adolf Hitler's threats of war. It is signed by future president JOHN F. KENNEDY on the front flyleaf. It also bears an inscription at top by Kennedy's brother, JOSPEH KENNEDY, JR.: 'To my favorite land lady, from the author's brother', thus the book is signed by both brothers. The older Kennedy was undoubtedly proud of young Jack's accomplishment as a writer, and no doubt obtained signed copies of this book to present to friends. Born in 1915, Joseph Kennedy, Jr. was the pride of the family. His father, Joseph Kennedy, Sr. had aspirations for him to become president. He was a delegate to the 1940 Democratic National Convention and planned to run for a seat in the House of Representatives after his military service as a a stepping stone on the path to the White House. His death while participating in a top-secret mission in 1944 caused his father to push his next-oldest son, John, into politics. Lightly worn with some stains inside the covers and out, overall fine.
