Description:

JOHN F. KENNEDY
Superb content T.L. [unsigned], 2pp. folio, Los Angeles, Apr. 13, 1956, pages three and four from then-Senator Kennedy's "Colonialism and American Foreign Policy" speech, annotated with pencil in Kennedy's hand. Kennedy's speech argued that United States support for its WWII European allies hurt America's Cold War efforts when those European states continued to aggressively pursue colonial expansion and exploitation. Kennedy's notes reveal that he considered changing the paragraph beginning with "...As a result, our policies and statements on these matters have too frequently been characterized by indecision..." by combining it with another paragraph and making additions to read: "I suppose it could be called neutrality, this policy-- if it can be called a policy-- of trying to look both ways at once... but more often it has been characterized by indecision...". Kennedy makes other notable edits, including a very telling change of tense: he slashed out a sentence reading "we shall no longer trade our vote on such issues for other supposed gains..." and wrote in, "We have traded our vote on such issues for other supposed gains...". Kennedy first gave the speech as a Senator at his only Los Angeles Town Hall appearance and then again in Kansas City on June 2, 1956. Sadly, he would become embroiled in the same thorny issues during his own presidency. Slight age toning with minor folds, else fine.
