JOHN CHURCHILL, DUKE OF MARLBOROUGH
(1650-1722) English military commander, "Corporal John" distinguished himself at the battle of Nijmegen by saving the life of the Duke of Monmouth, and continued as commander in chief over the armies of England and Holland under Queen Anne. Scarce A.L.S. "Marlborough", 1p. 4to., Ronsselaer, Jan. 17/28, 1706. He writes to a political ally in the midst of the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), in part: "...I have received the honor of your Lord's letter...Congratulating the happy success in this Country, and as I am very sensible that you who wish so well to the publick good, are no less satisfied with the advantages that may any way contribute thereto, so I assure myself I have so great a share in your friendship to doubt the sincerity of your kind expressions as to what concerns myself...". Moderately offset at middle, expertly inlaid, very good condition.
