JOHN C. BROWN
(1827 - 1889) Confederate major general captured at Fort Donelson, exchanged and led forces at Chickamauga, Chattanooga and Franklin where he was severely wounded and his command decimated. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. 4to., on "Army of the State of Tennessee" letterhead, Dec. 1, 1861, a very rare discharge for Private John H. Doyel, age 23, for medical reasons, and approved by Brown with a vertical signature: "Approved Jno C. Brown Col. 3rd Regt". With Doyel's last pay receipt. Very good condition.
