JOHN BROWN
(1736-1803) American merchant, slave trader, and statesman from Providence, Rhode Island. Played a leading role in the Gaspee Affair of 1772, in which a group of men led by Brown and Abraham Whipple boarded, looted and burned the British customs schooner HMS GASPEE after it ran aground. The event renewed hostilities between Britain and the colonies. War date A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Providence, July 16, 1776, to P.J. Curterions[?] regarding a business deal. In part: '...I left New York...have you distilled a considerable amount[?] of molasses and that you can tell...as fast as made...if you can't tell it without please reply to the Commanding General and make the best bargain you can work with him for the number...Please advise on receipt of this...' Substantial burn to the left margin affect part of the letter. Toned with scattered stains.
