JOHN BROWN
(1736-1803) American merchant, slave trader, and statesman from Providence, Rhode Island. Played a leading role in the Gaspee Affair of 1772, in which a group of men led by Brown and Abraham Whipple boarded, looted and burned the British customs schooner HMS GASPEE after it ran aground. The event renewed hostilities between Britain and the colonies. Manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Providence, February 4 1772, to John Waterman regarding a shipment of whale oil. In part: '...yours...[regarding] the ten casks of head matter came to hand...the river was froze up so William Barker could not [unknown due to burn]... his vessel we should have sent the money by him...The cask was in the worse order its possible to conceive...there was about 11 gallons but we are will to loose it if you paid for them full...and herewith send you cash...whatever head matter you may get the next season we shall be glad to have it at the same rate we give our other friends...' Large paper loss from a burn on the left margin affecting the letter. Cosigned by his brother NICHOLAS BROWN SR. (1729-1791), Rhode Island merchant and slave trader, instrumental in the founding of Brown University.
