JOHN BRADSTREET
(1711 - 1774) British colonial military officer who captured Fort Frontenac in 1758, breaking the French line between the St. Lawrence and Ohio rivers, and in 1764 led an army to suppress Pontiac's rebellion. Fine content D.S. "Jn. Bradstreet", 1p. legal folio, a military order issued by Bradstreet to all Albany constables impressing black freedmen! In part: "...you are hereby empowered & Commanded to empress one Negroe out of every Family...for Batoe [boat] men to be employed between [here?] and Still Water & no further and to remain in the service serving the time of the getting the Battoes to Still Water & no longer for which they will be paid the usual rates...service every Common man except Carpenters & Smiths they being already employ'd in the Kings service..." Split at seams but repaired on verso with archival tape, two dime-sized holes, a few trivial stains, still very good.
